What is the Best Photography Format
for Your Wedding?

OU want to use the best format for your photography depending upon your desires and needs. By "format" we mean the size of the camera/ negative and/or digital images. John used to shoot in both in 35mm and medium format. The advantages of shooting in the larger format was a better image quality. But times have changed.
Digital Photography

It used to be that digital could not stack up against film, but digital has now "come of age." Digital has many advantages, including being able to see your results on location (so you know if you got the shot). You can change the "film's" exposure rating on the fly, especially when conditions change. You can shoot "a few more images" even after most film spools have run out. And the ratio for lenses allows much more versatility when it comes to telephoto and wide angle opportunities.
There is no doubt that the use of a digital format (in most cases) is superior for shooting quickly and with more spontaneity than most film cameras. Because John uses a lens with a wide range (a 28-300mm zoom), he can shoot wide angle and telephoto shots within seconds of each other without having to change lenses, change positions or use a light meter. This flexibility allows a photographer to focus upon getting the right shot rather than on fiddling with his equipment.

The quality of John's digital format is sufficient for blow-ups to 8x10 and beyond. But if you desire to blow up your images really large, and you are choosing digital, be sure and let John know. He can increase the size of the original files for an extra fee (as this will take more work at the computer).

Photo Journalistic Style

When John shoots a wedding in a photo journalistic style, he looks for candid images on your wedding day that reveal various emotions from romantic feelings to nervousness and humor. He realizes that he is composing the "story" of your wedding while constantly looking for those un-posed shots that show what's happening in the hearts of the wedding couple, their family and their guests.

The ultimate photo journalistic photography is what we call the "Storybook". Here we shoot up to five hours worth of wedding images. This includes shots taken before the wedding of the bride and groom getting ready and spending time with their attendants. It includes candid shots of the family. It involves a thorough documentation of the wedding images taken from a reporter's vantage point. And then the photographer continues with the wedding party through the reception and the limo ride right through until the couple reaches their hotel.

John will shoot up to 400 images to produce a large photographic "Storybook" that will dramatically capture the essence of your special day. See color and black and white pricing for the "Storybook" on the Packages page.

With the photo journalistic style, we also look for images that tend to be wedding day icons which tell the story without much detail, like the wedding rings on a table next to the bouquet. Another example is this shot of the hands of the bride and groom during the ceremony. While we look for such images, we don't get carried away on these side shots, knowing that the bride and groom and their immediate family should be the real focus of attention.

Black and White

Most couples who want photo journalistic photography, want some of their images taken in black and white. If you prefer to have black and white instead of color, or if you want to mix black and white with color, we can do that even if we don't know that in advance.

All of our black and white is done on the computer after the wedding. This allows us to obtain both the color images and the black and white if you desire both. (See the Packages page where a table of prices).

The Best Format for Photo Journalism

Digital Photography is also the best format for shooting photo journalistic imagery. This is true because in digital the photographer can fire away whenever an interesting moment appears. He doesn't have to worry about burning up a lot of film. Digital also offers quicker shooting which is often necessary for the photographer to shoot those fleeting candid images that are best caught on the fly.

Because we us a zoom lens with a wide range, we can shoot wide angle and telephoto shots within seconds of each other without having to change lenses or use a light meter.
